  1. Reversible Motor- IS NOT AN ON OFF SWITCH_ NOR IS IT A FORWARD AND REVERSE SWITCH; use the reversing switch for controlling directional rotation as to assist in turning corners. Rotation Arrow indicates the proper rotation.  When reversing ALLOW THE MACHINE TO COME TO A COMPLETE STOP BEFORE REVERSING,( THIS PREVENTS THE REVERSING SWITCH FROM BURNING OUT PERMATURLY AND GIVING AN INDICATION OF A BURNT OUT MOTOR )  The reverse switch can be used to get around difficult elbows or backing off tension on the cable when hung up on a bad obstruction.  Once you have cleared the obstruction or turned the corner, stop the motor and place the reverse switch back to correct direction of rotation.

  1. Feed cable into drum using a back and forth motion, causing the cable to lie against the drum in nice flat even rows, not lose and sloppy.  Torque will feed back into the drum as obstructions are encountered during machine operation.  The torque will push the cable up against the drum wall.  When returning cable into the drum, make sure the cable feeds into the drum in even, tight rows, from back to front.  If a coil goes in unevenly, pull it back out and re-feed it.   Lose or overlapping cable in the drum may flip around and kink up during operation.  Remember the drum is not only a storage container for the cable- but an important functioning part of the machine

  1. Thumb Screws- Tighten down finger tight only, on drum bearings.

  1. Drum Cable Anchor- Cable instillation- Always be sure the end of the cable is securely anchored in the drum.  Check frequently to see that the anchor clip is holding the end of the cable, securely.  Very Important that the cable always coils into the drum in a clockwise rotation.

  1. Crank Arm- Be sure that the crank arm always turns freely without binding. When replacing a cable, be sure to check this.  Keep the crank arm well oiled.

  1. Oiling Machine- Do not over-oil the motor, with average use, once every few months is sufficient.  Oil the crank Arm shaft allowing excess oil to run into the drum.  A well-oiled cable will work easier and last longer.

  1. Machine Operation- Operate the machine close to the cleanout.  A length of pipe can be used when the machine has to be more than a few feet from the cleanout.  For overhead cleanouts, attach a section of pipe to the ladder, to control the torque and twisting of the cable during operation.  Insert the cable into the drainpipe before starting the motor.  Never force the cable! Pull the cable back and forth, let it do the work.  For difficult elbows and traps, try reversing the direction of rotation with the reversing switch.  Once around the difficult elbow (no more than 2 seconds) – stop the machine and change the direction back to normal.  Remember that new cable is extra stiff when new, so until it breaks in and loosens up- TAKE IT EASY-!

  1. NEVER FORCE THE CABLE- Feed the cable in slowly with a back and forth action.  When an obstruction is encountered, the cable will build up torque, which, can be noted by a tightening of the cable against the drum.  Pull back – releasing the built up torque- thus allowing the cutting blade to spin rapidly and cut at the blockage. Push the cable forward again till it hits the obstruction, building up torque. Repeat the process by pulling the cable back to release the built up torque enabling the blade to cut. Should cable become stuck, and reversing won’t help, stop machine and work the cable free.

  1. Always wear gloves (steel impregnated) and approved safety glasses along with long sleeves.  If cable breakage occurs and the machine continues to run, sharp edges may whip around causing injury.  Keep Body Parts and loose clothing away from moving parts,  (Drum, motor, belt & cable drive on the 400 model.  Do not disconnect footswitch or use remote means of applying pressure to foot pedal.  Keep foot on pedal and be prepared to release pressure to stop machine in case of trouble.

  1. Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter- Always use a GFCI for safety.  Newer Ken-Ways come complete with a GFCI, but use is recommended on older models as well

  1. Cable Replacement- Follow instructions on the tag that comes with all new cables.  We feel, that replacement with Ken-Way, heat-treated, music wire is the best.  Call or email with any questions!
